AdventureLAB News: December 15th, 2022

We’re happy to share that Klaus Sommer Paulsen has joined the recently launched project IDEAS as an industry representative and external consultant.

The aim of the IDEAS project is to design a joint master’s program to educate students towards senior and executive-level management positions in the themed entertainment, theme parks and attractions industry with a strong focus on international business management and sustainability. It is a significant moment for the industry, and we’re honoured to have the opportunity to contribute to its development.

The three universities involved in the project are Universitat Rovira i Virgili in Spain (URV, coordinator, lead beneficiary), Breda University of Applied Sciences in the Netherlands (BUas) and Université Côte d’Azur (UCA) in France. Important associations such as the International Attractions and Amusement Parks Association (IAAPA) and the Themed Entertainment Association (TEA) are also supporting the project.

The project began with a Kick-off Meeting at Universitat Rovira i Virgili Spain last month, where Klaus joined the team, who, among other things, discussed program objectives, teaching/training activities and competencies and learning outcomes.

Integrated Storytelling by Design to be published in Chinese by China Renmin University Press

AdventureLAB News: May 11th, 2022

The publisher Routledge Taylor and Francis Group has reached an agreement with China Renmin University Press to translate into Chinese and publish the book “Integrated Storytelling by Design” by Klaus Sommer Paulsen.

Reaching this milestone is very important for the book and the discipline. It reflects my experience interacting with people of different nationalities and backgrounds, looking to apply these principles to engage their audiences. One such interaction led to an interview for EDG Talk With Virtuoso with Brian Kuo, General Manager of EDG China. (Find the interview here)

Now that the book reaches new horizons, I am excited to see how this new audience will receive it. Perhaps working with storytelling as a design structure can unlock more methods that create bridges between cultures in more ways than I initially envisioned when I wrote the book.

It will be an exciting journey, and I’m looking forward to meeting and talking to more readers about unique way of applying Integrated Storytelling principles.

“Acknowledging the Dark Side of Storytelling” Chapter released to readers for free

AdventureLAB News: May 5th, 2022

Readers can now download two chapters from the book “Integrated Storytelling by Design”, where the author Klaus Sommer Paulsen addresses the dark side of storytelling as we encounter it manipulating and pushing hidden agendas.

As a distinctive part of the book, the chapter “Acknowledging the dark side of storytelling” addresses essential subjects and raises questions that help us navigate through the amalgam of information that we encounter daily. In the context of current global events, the author Klaus Sommer Paulsen saw it important to openly share this part of the book with readers worldwide.

Readers can learn about various scenarios where storytelling is applied to manipulate or steer the audience in the wrong direction. The complimentary released section also includes Chapter 35 called “From theory to practice: Uncovering hidden agendas”. It contains practical exercises that the readers can use to analyse specific situations or content if they suspect a hidden intention.

The stories we create and spread can have enormous power. We use storytelling to make connections, and most of the time, we use it with good intentions. However, there is also a dark side to storytelling, which we don’t often talk about but can learn to identify. I believe it is a crucial time to share this section of the book, and I encourage you to read it with an open mind and share it further. – Klaus Sommer Paulsen, author.

The released content can be downloaded as a PDF from the book’s website https://www.integratedstorytelling.com/acknowledging-the-dark-side-of-storytelling/

AdventureLAB joins the Jackalope Junction project team https://www.adventurelabstudio.com/2021/02/04/adventurelab-joins-the-jackalope-junction-project-team/ Thu, 04 Feb 2021 08:30:54 +0000 http://www.adventurelabstudio.com/?p=11635

AdventureLAB is joining the team that will bring the Jackalope Junction StoryPark to the USA

Jackalope Junction is Greg Schumsky’s vision of a one-of-a-kind theme park based on his original story, and it is getting closer each day to becoming a reality. AdventureLAB is joining Greg and his team at Acorn Entertainment Group to strengthen the story focused strategy for the park and support the story development and implementation.

The Jackalope Junction universe wraps around the unique combination of western and steampunk themes. It will welcome visitors to destinations like the Rabbit’s Tale saloon, the Junior Deputy School, the County Fair and many more. The diversity of characters sets the scene for an abundance of events to engage in and follow. The park activities will bring the visitors into a living story, meaning that each day is unique and surprising. To achieve this, the team will integrate the story into all the concept development and implementation levels.

All the adventures of this universe need to make their way to the stage in the park and the visitors’ hearts and minds. That is why AdventureLAB will support the team to create a solid creative strategy. It will bring forward the story’s potential and power to engage visitors and create memorable experiences.

From the core story and strategy to experiential and transmedia implementation, we will apply our expertise from years of working in the themed entertainment industry and developing the Integrated Storytelling principles. Klaus Sommer Paulsen, CEO and Founder of AdventureLAB.

Greg Schumsky is a veteran experience designer with a background in video, film, animation, publishing, engineering, interactive design, architecture and education. With over 40 years of experience bringing joy and laughter to people of all ages, he has always had one goal, to create great experiences that transport people to other places and even worlds. This mission is finally being realised with Jackalope Junction’s creation – a world where animals and people co-exist in a small town. Here, each character comes to life with a rich and deep, personal story to which almost anyone can relate.

The idea for Jackalope Junction came about while Greg and his wife were making several trips to various vintage markets near an old abandoned amusement park. One that he, as well as others, had visited numerous times as children. It wasn’t any ordinary amusement park but one that had a western theme to it, with pony rides around a large track, covered wagons for parties, and of course, their mascot Marshall Scotty, who the park was named after.

But as the park sat, Greg had an idea – why not build a new park, one that’s never been done before. It will have a Western and Steampunk theme, it’s a town of the past, with its citizens and mysterious story as to how it was discovered? — Acorn Entertainment Group.

It’s our pleasure and an honour to be working side by side with Klaus Sommer Paulsen and the AdventureLAB team on the myriad stories that make up Jackalope Junction and ultimately will bring it to life! — Greg Schumsky

Acorn Entertainment Group
Acorn Entertainment Group was formed for the sole purpose of developing and managing the IP of the Jackalope Junction franchise. The goal is to have a multimedia approach to the rich story and characters of Jackalope Junction — from children’s books to animated television, licensed merchandise, and of course, the creation of the town of Jackalope Junction. This is the Storypark where families can spend a day reconnecting, make great memories, and even be part of an adventure if they want, in a town that is about morals, values, and life lessons that celebrate being victorious over anything that gets in life’s way. It’s hoped that creating those experiences will allow Acorn Entertainment Group to expand, by offering design and build services for other small parks – whether FEC’s or indoor mall experiences, through their on-site fabrication and R&D shop.

New Bornholm’s Medieval Center exhibition designed by AdventureLAB https://www.adventurelabstudio.com/2020/09/29/bornholms-medieval-center/ Tue, 29 Sep 2020 09:54:14 +0000 http://www.adventurelabstudio.com/?p=11045

AdventureLAB designs the new pirate exhibition for Bornholm’s Medieval Center

In 2021 Bornholm’s Medieval Center (BMC) will open a new exhibition for their guests. We are very excited to announce that AdventureLAB is working together with BMC not only to provide the creative content but also to design the exhibition applying the latest storytelling-based design methodology.

The central topic of the exhibition focuses on the pirates who roamed the Baltic Sea in the 14th Century. But they were not the ordinary pirates as one would immediately think. They were often hired by conflicting parties, such as private persons, kingdoms, duchies or even trade unions of the Baltic Sea to play their war games on the water. They saw themselves as professionals in maritime violence. Attacking the enemy’s ships was for them just a well-paid job, rather than a lifestyle. At the same time, their opponents called them “sørøvere” which means “sea robbers”.

To build an authentic and engaging experience, we apply our Integrated Storytelling design method. This method creates a synergy between the story and the experience while empowering the audience with new roles. Therefore it allows them to immerse themselves in engaging memorable moments. For this unique project, we are combining the history of the “sørøvere” with world-building and physical spaces and interactions. The exhibition will welcome the guests of all ages at the Medieval Center. And we are happy to work in close collaboration with Kasper Vegeberg (BMC Development and advertising) and Lena Mühlig (BMC Head of communication and historical content). This collaboration is important for integrating this new experience in the world of Bornholm’s Medieval Center.

Bornholms Middelaldercenter

BMC is an open-air museum, located on the Bornholm island of Denmark. The Center first opened its doors in 1996. Here visitors can explore medieval daily life, a fortified manor house, outdoor activities and much more.

Experience Industry Challenge 2020 https://www.adventurelabstudio.com/2020/01/28/experience-industry-challenge-2020/ Tue, 28 Jan 2020 15:23:16 +0000 http://www.adventurelabstudio.com/?p=8198

Experience Industry Challenge 2020: Retail 3.0+

AdventureLAB announces Experience Industry Challenge 2020 – an event set out to accelerate the retail evolution with the involvement of international Experience Economy experts Joe Pine and Albert Boswijk

In central Copenhagen, Denmark on April 24, a group of 40 people with expertise in retail will join forces in a one-day collaboration with a clearly defined vision and mission: Rethinking the retail experience can revitalise the physical store. Now is the time to go from thought to action and make things happen on an unprecedented scale of reinvention. The goal is not just to push the evolution to the point of the Retail 3.0 experience, but even further forward: Retail 3.0+, which is reflected in the title of the event.

Joe Pine and Albert Boswijk, who are both experienced and respected speakers, strategists and workshop facilitators, will join the event. EIC2020 is a rare opportunity to not only have them both presenting but actively involved in the collaborative session, which will make up most of the day in Copenhagen.

“Experience Industry Challenge 2020: Retail 3.0+ (EIC2020) is not a conference. It is a one-day mission designed for retail experts to involve them in a collaboration to define and develop what retail can deliver being an active part of the new Experience Economy” says Klaus Sommer Paulsen, CEO & Founder of AdventureLAB.

The event is designed for individuals with an expertise in retail, who will join as paying attendees to learn, share and collaborate on a higher level. Some of the solutions and guidelines that the group comes up with are intended to be shared with other retail experience professionals in the form of the EIC2020 report, which will be made available online, with every participant listed as contributors.
